For Bluffs, Cliffs & Hillsides

A "Cliffhanger" project "before" and in progress.

A bluff on beautiful view property on Whidbey Island experiences continual erosion, which has diminished the yard size over time.

THE PLAN

The Cliffhanger plan for this property is to install vegetation on the top and on the face, supported by a grid netting, to help with erosion control;

and to install larger trees at the base of the cliff both for erosion control and to help lessen the wind.  The property owner also wanted intrusive ivy (non-natural vegetation) removed and the area generally cleaned-up of refuse and debris.

This job is shown from start to finish in the photos below.

The Existing Site

The hillside experiences continual erosion, and non-native ivy is taking over. There is also some refuse and debris on the site, which is visible from the house and property.

Step #1: Site Preparation

The first step is toe cut back some of the vegetation and clean-up the area to prepare for the grid and planting. We preserve the existing vegetation--the more vegetation the better.

Clean-Up Continued

The site ready for the grid. Ivy removal has resulted in a bare patch of dirt, which is somewhat unusual for a Cliffhanger project.

Access

This project had excellent access to the planting area, which is very helpful.

Site Preparation (Cont.)

This project required adding some topsoil and then rolling the area to prepare for the grid and planting.

Step 2: Install Grid

Once the site preparation is complete, the next step is to install a grid. In this instance the property owner wanted a biodegradable grid.

Grid Installation (Cont.)

This project was just one section of a hillside that the property owner wants to have re-vegetated, so he requested that we also experiment with a more-permanent grid. This is a "poly" grid that will last for several years.

Step #3: Planting

The next step is planting with native vegetation. Plants are selected for their growth habit, rooting characteristics, drought tolerance, etc.

Planting (Cont.)

Trees are planted lower down on the project to lessen wind up the hill. These trees have been selected and planted so that they won't grow up and block the view.

Planting (Cont.)

A side view of the grids and planting.

Project Completed

The completed project (except for irrigation which will be added in early Spring).
